Contractor To Prepare Project Site For Construction

WESTPORT, CONN. – June 2, 2020 – Aquarion Water Company today announced it will begin site preparation for the North Avenue water tank project at 63-67 North Avenue in Westport. This initial work, scheduled to start June 4, calls for the installation of erosion controls, temporary fencing and limited site clearing. The water tank project includes construction of two 40 foot tall water tanks, removal of an existing tank, and extensive landscape restoration throughout the property. The project is expected to take approximately two years to complete.

The water tank project will provide Westport residents with a significantly expanded water storage supply for fire protection and everyday water usage.

“Aquarion, town and state officials, the fire department, residents, and the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) worked collaboratively to finalize this substantial infrastructure project for the Town of Westport,” said Aquarion President, Donald Morrissey. “Once completed, these water tanks will provide residents with high-quality, reliable water service for decades to come.”

Based on the final December 18, 2019 water tank project decision by PURA, several conditions are required to be met. Recently completed items include:

  • Aquarion’s installation of sound dampening equipment at the project site to reduce noise levels related to operation of the onsite pump station’s emergency generator.
  • The Town of Westport’s selection of an ombudsman.  Ms. Gail Kelly, Esq., who served as Westport Assistant Town Attorney, was chosen for this position.

  • Aquarion’s selection of an engineering firm to serve as an independent site monitor.  Stamford-based, Redniss & Mead was chosen for this responsibility.

  • In the current COVID-19 environment, comprehensive safety measures were also developed by Aquarion to be followed by all parties working at project site.

Louisville, KY-based, Preload, LLC, a global leader in prestressed concrete tank design and construction, has been selected to construct the two water tanks. Weekday working hours of 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. will be observed excluding pre-arranged exceptions. Aquarion will work closely with town officials, residents, and its contractor to coordinate work and minimize any impact on residents.

Weekly project updates including construction status and work schedule will be posted on Aquarion’s website at www.aquarionwater.com/infrastructure-projects.
