Watershed Maintenance Technician Intern

The Watershed Maintenance Technician Intern provides key support to the Watershed and Environmental Management Department (WEM). This position is responsible for safely performing a wide variety of duties related to the maintenance of outside properties, woodlands, fields, dam slopes, well fields, roadsides, shorelines, etc. in order to maintain prudent stewardship of the watershed properties. Assists in source protection and natural resource management activities, as directed. This is a full-time 40 hour a week, paid internship at $15.00 an hour.

Principal responsibility and activities include:
  • Conduct all activities and equipment operation in a safe manner
  • Mow grass including dam slopes, pipelines, & roadsides with tractor mounted implements
  • Removal of cuts, chips, and/or burns brush and trees
  • Pickup and removal of Litter/rubbish
  • Operations pertaining to wildlife management
  • Tree and shrub planting
  • Snow removal at company facilities
  • Forest access road construction and maintenance
  • Assist with maintenance of equipment
  • Conduct or manage field repairs of equipment when necessary
  • Utilize communication tools (e.g. company email, company-issued cell phone) to keep supervisor or others informed of progress and/or issues encountered in the field
Equipment Operating Capabilities:
  • AEBI slope mowing tractor (flail mower and snow blower)
  • rubber tire tractors in excess of 45hp
  • tractor implements: 3 bottom plow, wheel barrow, fertilizer spreader, flail mowers (6’ and 8’), offset rotary mower (10’) brush mower(8’), hydraulic boom mower (16’), PTO driven tank sprayer (100 gallon) calibration of sprayers, boats and outboard motors: 16’ Maritime, 30hp Envinrude E-Tech outboard, various sized aluminum boats with 6-9hp Nissan outboard motors
  • Walk-behind mowers: Kut Kwik 36”, Scag 52”, BCS 30”
  • Chainsaws, weedeaters, backpack sprayers
  • Truck-mounted snow plow and sander
Know-How:
  • Minimum high school diploma required, associate or trade school certificate is highly desirable
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on fieldwork experience
  • Minimum 2 years of heavy equipment operation
  • Below certifications are desirable. Aquarion will assist a successful candidate in obtaining:
    • Forklift Operator Certificate
    • Connecticut Boating Safety Course Certificate
    • Commercial Driver’s License (Class A and Class B with air brake endorsements)
