Director of Business Development

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to lead and successfully execute Aquarion Water Company’s (AWC’s) business development. Provide vision and leadership for development of strategy and tactics for AWC. Develop winning proposals that garner partnerships within the Water Industry. Manage and drive the efforts behind AWC’s growth strategy to expand market distribution by implementing public private partnerships (PPP).

Key Accountabilities

Market Development:
  • Develop business plans, forecasts, budgets, proposals, marketing materials, sales presentations and business models.
  • Identify candidate municipalities and/or utilities to be acquired and integrated into the Aquarion network of service areas.
  • Identify, research and launch partnership and endorsement contracts with public (municipal) and private companies to expand market distribution within the water sector.
  • Manage a network of advocate firms and consultants to help open doors for our proposition.
  • Drive business performance by contributing strategic and tactical professional experience, knowledge and skills.
Competitive Intelligence:
  • Monitor and stay current of industry trends through the collection of intelligence on competitors, market developments, customers and businesses in relevant arenas that can lead to opportunities for growth.
Aquarion Water Company Coordination:
  • Network and coordinate closely with the corporate business development functions, corporate compliance and other internal stakeholders to establish successful support, channel and partner programs consistent with the overall objectives and vision of AWC.
  • Work cross-functionally with other AWC team members to accomplish organizational and departmental objectives.
  • Candidate should be an executive, well networked in the water and wastewater industry, particularly in CT, MA, NH and RI. Experience interfacing with regulatory agencies such as public regulatory authorities, state public health and environmental protection agencies and offices of consumer affairs is a plus.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and municipal leaders who have influence and/or decision-making authority.
  • Strong sales management skills including the ability to successfully ‘close’ partnerships (e.g., planning, organization, direction of employees); strong verbal and written communication skills (e.g., tact/diplomacy, persuasion, cooperation, ability to motivate, negotiate others).
  • Strong project management skills including a demonstrated ability to create and achieve goals and objectives.
  • Problem solving and decision-making.
  • Computer applications - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing or engineering is required. MBA preferred, but not required.
  • A minimum of 7- 10 years of demonstrated sales, business development or engineering experience.
  • An understanding of the competitive environment for Water Industry partnerships in both the public (traditional) and private (non-traditional and affinity) sectors preferred.
  • Ability to understand organizational risk – both financial and brand reputation – and develop and execute on clear financial strategies and plans.
  • Duties and responsibilities will require early morning and/or late evening meetings with prospective clients on a periodic basis (monthly, quarterly, and bi-annual).
